Rebuilt three times and completed over 40 years, Grace celebrates community and human
endeavor with an AIDS memorial chapel altarpiece by Keith Haring, murals honoring the
founding of the UN in San Francisco, and Gothic stained-glass windows featuring Albert
Einstein uplifted in swirling atomic particles. Check the website for choral performances
with Grace's splendid acoustics.
San Francisco Art Institute ART GALLERY
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.sfai.edu ; 800 Chestnut St; admission free; Walter & McBean Galler-
ies: 11am-7pm Tue, to 6pm Wed-Sat; Diego Rivera Gallery: 9am-5pm; Powell-Mason)
Founded in the 1870s, SFAI was the vanguard for 1960s Bay Area Abstraction, 1970s con-
ceptual art, and 1990s new-media art - glimpse what's next in contemporary art here at the
Walter & McBean Gallery . Diego Rivera's 1931 The Making of a Fresco Showing a
Building of a City sprawls across Diego Rivera Gallery , showing the artist pausing to ad-
mire the constant work-in-progress that is San Francisco.
Lombard Street STREET
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 900 block of Lombard St; Powell-Hyde)
You've seen Lombard's eight downhill switchbacks on postcards, movies (Vertigo) , TV
(The Real World) , even video games (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater ). Billed incorrectly as 'the
world's crookedest street' - SF's Vermont St deserves the honor - scenic Lombard St earns
street cred with zigzagging flowerbeds. The street often closes to traffic on busy summer
weekends, accommodating pedestrians who brave 250 steps for Sterling Park sunsets
with Golden Gate Bridge views.
