In-Depth Information
Sunset Limited Thrice-weekly service between New Orleans and LA (from $130, 47
hours) via Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson and Palm Springs.
TRAIN PASSES
Amtrak's USA Rail Pass is valid for coach-class train travel only (and not Thruway buses)
for 15 ($449), 30 ($679) or 45 ($879) days; children aged two to 15 pay half-price. Travel is
limited to eight, 12 or 18 one-way 'segments,' respectively. A segment is not the same as a
one-way trip; if reaching your destination requires riding more than one train, you'll use mul-
tiple pass segments. Purchase passes online, then make advance reservations for each
trip segment.
GETTING AROUND
Most people drive around California, although you can also fly (if time is limited, but your
budget isn't) or save money by taking buses or often scenic trains.
Air
Several major US carriers fly within California. Flights are often operated by their regional
subsidiaries, such as American Eagle, Delta Connection and United Express. Alaska Air-
lines, Frontier Airlines and Horizon Air serve many regional airports, as do low-cost airlines
Southwest and Spirit. Virgin America currently flies out of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San
Diego and Palm Springs. JetBlue serves LA County, the San Francisco Bay Area, San
Diego and Sacramento.
Bicycle
Although cycling around California is a nonpolluting 'green' way to travel, the distances in-
volved demand a high level of fitness and make it hard to cover much ground. Forget about
the deserts in summer and the mountains in winter.
