Theatre gained a national reputation in the 1970s, when Sam Shepard was the theater's
resident playwright, and it still premieres innovative California playwrights today. An
audience-interactive troupe, We Players stages classic plays including Shakespearean dra-
mas at unusual locations like Alcatraz. Across the Bay, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre has
