the surrounding desert, including the first breaking of the sound barrier, the first hyperson-
ic flight and the first space-shuttle landing. It has one of America's largest collections of
rocket engines, from the X-1 and X-15 to the latest composites

Next door to Saxon Aerospace Museum, this low-budget museum is a haphazardly organ-
ized treasure trove of historic knickknacks: a 1930s beauty shop, products made with loc-
ally mined borax, watch fobs, belt buckles and memorabilia of the 2000 movie
Erin
Brockovich,
which was filmed nearby and employed many locals as extras; Julia Roberts
won an Oscar for the title role.
