TURN BACK THE CLOCK AT PIONEERTOWN
Turn north off Hwy 62 onto Pioneertown Rd in Yucca Valley and drive 5 miles straight into
the past. Looking like an 1870s frontier town, Pioneertown ( www.pioneertown.com ; admission
free; ) was actually built in 1946 as a Hollywood Western outdoor movie set. Gene Autry
and Roy Rogers were among the original investors, and more than 50 movies and several
TV shows were filmed here in the 1940s and '50s. These days the Pioneertown Posse
stages mock gunfights on 'Mane St' at 2:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays from April to
October.
For local color, toothsome BBQ, cheap beer and kick-ass live music, drop in at Pappy &
Harriet's Pioneertown Palace ( 760-365-5956; www.pappyandharriets.com ; 53688 Pioneer-
town Rd, Pioneertown; mains $8-29; 11am-2am Thu-Sun, from 5pm Mon), a textbook honky-
tonk. Monday's open-mic nights are legendary and often bring out astounding talent.
Within staggering distance is the atmospheric Pioneertown Motel ( 760-365-7001;
www.pioneertown-motel.com ; 5040 Curtis Rd, Pioneertown; r $70-120; ), where yes-
teryear's silver-screen stars once slept during filming, and whose rooms are now filled
with eccentric Western-themed memorabilia; some have kitchenettes.
About 4.5 miles north of here, Rimrock Ranch Cabins ( 760-228-1297;
www.rimrockranchcabins.com ; 50857 Burns Canyon Rd, Pioneertown; cabins $90-140; ) is a
cluster of vintage 1940s cabins with kitchens and private patios perfect for stargazing.
