OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
INTEGRATRON
In 1947 former aerospace engineer George van Tassel moved his family to a patch of
dusty desert north of Joshua Tree. The land included a free-standing boulder, beneath
which local desert rat Frank Critzer had excavated a series of rooms. Van Tassel started
meditating in these rooms and, as the story goes, was visited in August 1953 by a flying
saucer from Venus. The aliens invited him aboard and taught him the technique for reju-
venating living cells. Van Tassel used his otherworldly knowledge to build the Integratron
( 760-364-3126; www.integratron.com ; 2477 Belfield Boulevard, Landers; sound baths $20-80), a
wooden domed structure that he variously called a time machine, an antigravity device
and a rejuvenation chamber. Judge for yourself by taking a personal tour or a sonic heal-
ing bath, in which crystal bowls are struck under the acoustically perfect dome. Check
the website for special events such as UFO symposiums. Public sound baths are conduc-
ted at 11:45am, 1pm and 2:15pm on two weekends a month (the website has dates). All
other visits are by appointment only.
Shopping
In arty Joshua Tree, look for a cluster of galleries on Twentynine Palms Hwy within a
couple blocks of the park entrance. Opening hours and works vary.
