This basic, 12-room motel around a simple courtyard is a good option for modern nomads
not keen on dropping bunches of cash for a roof over their heads. Most of the well-worn
rooms have microwaves and mini refrigerators. It's a short walk to eateries and outdoor
outfitters. Pool opens in summer only.

Fancy sleeping among glowing wigs, in a haunted house, or in a horse stall? Check in at
Hicksville, where 'rooms' are eight outlandishly decorated vintage trailers set around a
kidney-shaped, saltwater swimming pool. The vision of LA writer and director Morgan
Higby Night, each offers a journey into a unique, surreal and slightly wicked world. All
but two share facilities. To keep out looky-loos, you'll only be given directions after mak-
ing reservations.

This handsome hacienda-style inn is perfect for restoring calm after a long day on the
road. The five boldly colored suites are an eccentric symphony of corrugated tin, old li-
cense plates and cartoon art. Each has its own kitchen and flat-screen TV with DVD and
CD player. Knowledgeable, gregarious owners ensure a relaxed visit. It's down the dirt
Sunkist Rd, about 3 miles east of downtown Joshua Tree.
