Sunnylands
is the retro-glam, mid-century modern estate of Walter and Leonore Annen-
berg, one of America's 'first families'. Walter (1908-2002) was an American publisher,
ambassador and philanthropist, and 'Lee' (1918-2009) was Chief of Protocol under Pres-
ident Ronald Reagan. At their winter estate in Rancho Mirage, designed by A Quincy
Jones and surrounded by grounds incorporating a nine-hole golf course, the Annenbergs
entertained seven US presidents, royalty, and Hollywood and international celebrities.
These days Sunnylands is nicknamed the 'West Coast Camp David' for summits between
President Obama and world leaders including Chinese president Xi Jinping and King Ab-
dullah of Jordan.
Now the rest of us can visit too. A new visitor center and museum screen a film and
show changing exhibits about the estate. Just beyond is a magnificent desert garden.
Reserve as early as possible for tours of the stunning house with its art collection, archi-
tecture and furniture. Tickets go on sale online on the 1st and 15th of each month for the
period beginning two weeks onward.
