This amazing zoo exhibits a variety of desert plants and animals, alongside exhibits on
desert geology and Native American culture. Highlights include a walk-through wildlife
hospital and an African-themed village with a fair-trade market and storytelling grove.
Camel rides, a spin on the endangered species carousel, and a hop-on, hop-off shuttle cost
extra. It's educational fun and worth the 30-minute (15 mile) drive down-valley.

Cabot Yerxa, a wealthy East Coaster who traded high society for desert solitude, hand built
this rambling 1913 adobe from reclaimed and found objects, including telephone poles and
wagon parts. Today it's a quirky museum displaying Native American basketry and pot-
tery, as well as a photo collection from Cabot's turn-of-the-century travels to Alaska. Call
ahead to confirm tour availability. It's about 13 miles north of central Palm Springs.

ELVIS' LOVE NEST
One of the most spectacular mid-century modern houses in Palm Springs was designed
in the early 1960s by local developer Robert Alexander for his wife, Helene. It consists of
four circular rooms built on three levels, accented with glass and stone. Lookmagazine
called it the 'House of Tomorrow' and featured it in an eight-page spread, making the Al-
exanders national celebrities. Sadly the entire family died in a plane crash in 1965, but the
estate gained even greater fame a year later when Elvis Presley moved in. On May 1, 1967
he carried his new bride Priscilla over the threshold to begin their honeymoon. The Elvis
Honeymoon Hideaway ( 760-322-1192; www.elvishoneymoon.com ; 1350 Ladera Circle; per per-
son $30; tours 1pm & 3:30pm daily or by appointment) has been authentically restored and
can be visited on daily tours (reservations recommended).
