In Palm Springs' compact downtown, Hwy 111 runs south as Palm Canyon Dr, paralleled
by northbound Indian Canyon Dr. Tahquitz Canyon Way, dividing addresses north from
south, heads east to Palm Springs' airport.
Some of the area's attractions are spread out across the Coachella Valley, also called
'Down Valley', as you head southeast from Palm Springs. Travel on Hwy 111 links the
towns, but can be extremely slow thanks to dozens of traffic lights. Depending on where in
the valley you're headed, it may be quicker to take I-10.
Notable buildings around town include the 1884 McCallum Adobe ( MAP

E Stewart Williams-designed Chase Bank ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ) .

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway CABLE CAR
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 888-515-8726; www.pstramway.com ; 1 Tram Way; adult/child $24/17;
from 10am Mon-Fri, 8am Sat & Sun, last tram up 8pm, last tram down 9:45pm daily)
North of downtown, this rotating cable car is a highlight of any Palm Springs trip. It
climbs nearly 6000 vertical feet through five different vegetation zones, from the Sonoran
desert floor to the San Jacinto Mountains, in less than 15 minutes. The 2.5-mile ascent is
said to be the temperature equivalent of driving from Mexico to Canada. It's 30°F to 40°F
(up to 22°C) cooler as you step out into pine forests at the top, so bring warm clothing.
Snow is not uncommon, even in the spring and fall.
