At the edge of downtown La Jolla, this 30-room 1950s-era motel was recently restored in
period style with custom-built tables and chairs, teak headboards and new mattresses. Flat-
screen TVs are a concession to the 21st century. A roof deck gives long-distance views.

Publicity stills of Lon Cheney, Lillian Gish and Greta Garbo line the hallways of this 1926
landmark: pink-walled, Mediterranean-style and designed by William Templeton Johnson.
Among its 112 rooms, the ones in the main building are rather compact (befitting the era),
but villas are spacious and in any case the property wins for Old Hollywood romance.
Even if you don't stay, consider lifting a toast - and a pinkie - to the sunset from its Span-
ish Revival lounge, la Sala. Parking is $29.

About as close as you can stay to the beach and Scripps Park, colorful banners mark the
perimeter of this new, Balinese-style inn. Rooms vary in size, but all have kitchens and sit-
ting areas, and suites are filled wtih Balinese art and antiques. Continental breakfast is
served in the Gathering Room; enjoy it on multiple ocean-view decks.

Harry's Coffee Shop DINER
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 858-454-7381; 7545 Girard Ave; dishes $5-13; 6am-3pm; )
This classic 1960s coffee shop has a posse of regulars from blue-haired socialites to sports
celebs. The food is standard-issue American - pancakes, tuna melts, burgers and (a local
concession, breakfast burritos) - but it's the aura of the place that makes it special.
