This kid-friendly campground sits on a famous 1.5-mile stretch of beach. Offshore kelp
beds, caves, tide pools, plus the wilderness of the Santa Monica Mountains create a natural
playground. There are 140 flat, tree-shaded sites, flush toilets and coin-operated hot
showers. Bookings for summer weekends should be made months in advance.

with an array of fairly large rooms drenched in corny florals. But they all have sun patios
and some have massive sea views.

Near the beach and promenade, this hostel has an enviable location on the cheap. Its 200
beds in single-sex dorms and bed-in-a-box doubles with shared bathrooms are clean and
safe, and there are plenty of public spaces to lounge and surf, but those looking to party are
better off in Venice or Hollywood.

one-bedroom apartments of the historic Embassy Hotel (c 1927). Expect a lobby with
terra-cotta floors, beamed ceilings and coffee bar, plus booths and leather sofas on which
you can canoodle and surf.
