Twenty years ago, when Swingers mania tore through LA like a proto-hipster storm, Los
Feliz, (mis-) pronounced Fee-lez by the hordes, emerged as LA's next great neighborhood,
not least because of the wonderful Griffith Park. A gift to the city in 1896 by mining
mogul Griffith J Griffith, and five times the size of New York's Central Park, Griffith
Park ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 323-913-4688; www.laparks.org/dos/parks/griffithpk ; 4730 Crystal
Springs Dr; 5am-10:30pm, trails sunrise-sunset; ) is one of the country's largest urban
green spaces. There you'll find a major outdoor theater, the city zoo, two museums, golf
courses, playgrounds, 53 miles of hiking trails , Batman's caves and the Hollywood sign.
It's crowned by the iconic 1935 Observatory ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 213-473-0800;

$7/3;
noon-10pm Tue-Fri, from 10am Sat & Sun;
) , a first-class planetarium and wonder-
ful Instagram photo-op. Don't miss it.
