Solvang
Pop 5345
My God, cap'n, we've hit a windmill! Which can only mean one thing in Wine Country:
Solvang, a Danish village founded in 1911 on what was once a 19th-century Spanish-colo-
nial mission and later a Mexican rancho land grant. This Santa Ynez Valley town holds
tight to its Danish heritage, or at least stereotypical images thereof. With its knickknack
stores and cutesy motels, the town is almost as sticky-sweet as the Scandinavian pastries
foisted upon the wandering crowds of day trippers. Solvang's kitschy charms make it
worth visiting if only to gawk.

Off Hwy 246 just east of downtown's Alisal Rd, this historic Catholic mission set the stage
for a Chumash revolt against Spanish-colonial cruelty in 1824. Ask for a free (albeit his-
torically biased) audioguide tour of the gardens, small museum and restored church, still
an active parish today.
Elverhøj Museum MUSEUM

12yr $5/free; 11am-4pm Wed-Sun)
South of downtown, tucked away on residential side streets, this delightful little museum
has modest but thoughtful exhibits on Solvang's Danish heritage, as well as Danish cul-
ture, art and history.
