In-Depth Information
Stay out of the ocean for at least three days after a major rainstorm because of danger-
ously high levels of pollutants flushed out through storm drains.
Water quality varies from beach to beach, and day to day. For current water-safety condi-
tions and beach closures, check the Beach Report Card ( http://brc.healthebay.org ) issued by
the nonprofit organization Heal the Bay ( www.healthebay.org ) .
WARNING! RIPTIDES
If you find yourself being carried offshore by a dangerous ocean current called a riptide,
the important thing is to just keep afloat. Don't panic or try to swim against the current,
as this will quickly exhaust you and you could drown. Instead, swim parallel to the
shoreline and once the current stops pulling you out, swim back to shore.
