In-Depth Information
Right on the beach, you can rent sea kayaks, wetsuits, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP)
sets, bodyboards and surfboards, or take a kayak-fishing trip or a guided paddle around
San Simeon Cove.
Sleeping & Eating
A few miles south of Hearst Castle, the modern town of San Simeon is nothing more than
a strip of unexciting motels and lackluster restaurants. There are better-value places to stay
and eat in Cambria and beach towns further south, such as Cayucos and Morro Bay.
San Simeon State Park Campground CAMPGROUND
( reservations 800-444-7275; www.reserveamerica.com ; Hwy 1; tent & RV sites $20-25)
About 5 miles south of Hearst Castle are two state-park campgrounds: San Simeon
Creek , with coin-op hot showers and flush toilets; and undeveloped Washburn , located
along a dirt road. Drinking water is available at both.
Morgan MOTEL
( 800-451-9900, 805-927-3828; www.hotel-morgan.com ; 9135 Hearst Dr; r incl breakfast $139-235;
)
Although rates are high for these revamped motel-style accommodations, the oceanfront
setting makes up for a lot, as do gas fireplaces in deluxe rooms. Complimentary continent-
al breakfast and board games to borrow. Pet fee $25.
Sebastian's General Store DELI, GROCERIES
(442 SLO-San Simeon Rd; mains $7-12; 11am-5pm, kitchen closes at 4pm)
Down a side road across Hwy 1 from Hearst Castle, this tiny historic market sells cold
drinks, Hearst Ranch beef burgers, giant deli sandwiches and salads for beach picnics at
San Simeon Cove. Hearst Ranch Winery tastings are available at the copper-top bar.
