At Big Sur's southern edge, split-level motel rooms are nothing special, except for those
with ocean horizon views. Pet fee $50.

$675; )
The last word in luxurious coastal getaways, the exclusive Post Ranch pampers demanding
guests with slate spa tubs, wood-burning fireplaces, private decks and walking sticks for
coastal hikes. Ocean-view rooms celebrate the sea, while treehouses lack views and have a
bit of sway. Paddle around the clifftop infinity pool after a shamanic-healing session or
yoga class in the spa. No children allowed.
Panoramic sea-view Sierra Mar restaurant has mostly disappointing food, except for the
gourmet breakfast buffet served to guests only.
Ventana Inn & Spa
RESORT
breakfast from $510; )
Almost at odds with Big Sur's hippie-alternative vibe, Ventana injects a little soul into its
deluxe digs. Honeymooning couples and paparazzi-fleeing celebs pad from tai chi class to
the Japanese baths and outdoor pools (one is famously clothing-optional), or hole up all
day next to the wood-burning fireplace in their own private villa, hot-tub suite or ocean-
view cottage.
Treebones Resort
LODGE
shared bath incl breakfast from $215; )
Don't let the word 'resort' throw you. Yes, they've got an ocean-view hot tub, heated pool
and massage treatments. But a unique woven 'human nest' and canvas-sided yurts with
polished pine floors, quilt-covered beds, sink vanities and redwood decks are more like
glamping, with little privacy. Communal bathrooms and showers are a short stroll away.
Wi-fi in main lodge only.
