This stately early-19th-century adobe home was built by John Rogers Cooper, a New Eng-
land sea captain, and three generations of his family resided here. Over time, the original
adobe buildings were partitioned and expanded, gardens were added and later everything
was willed to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Worth a browse, the bookshop
sells nostalgic toys and household goods.

Near the waterfront, this voluminous modern exhibition hall illuminates Monterey's salty
past, from early Spanish explorers to the roller-coaster-like rise and fall of the local
sardine industry that brought Cannery Row to life in the mid-20th century. Highlights in-
clude a ship-in-a-bottle collection and the historic Fresnel lens from Point Sur's lighthouse.
Monterey Museum of Art MUSEUM

Downtown, MMA Pacific Street ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 831-372-5477; 559 Pacific St) is
particularly strong in California contemporary art and modern landscape painters and pho-
tographers, including Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Temporary exhibits fill MMA La
Mirada ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 831-372-3689; 720 Via Mirada) , a silent-film star's villa,
whose humble adobe origins are exquisitely concealed. You can visit both locations on the
same admission ticket.
