Santa Cruz is 75 miles south of San Francisco via coastal Hwy 1 or Hwy 17, a nail-bit-
ingly narrow, winding mountain road. Monterey is about an hour's drive further south via
Hwy 1.
Santa Cruz Airport Shuttles ( 831-421-9883; www.santacruzshuttles.com ) runs shared
shuttles to/from the airports at San Jose ($50), San Francisco ($80) and Oakland ($80),
with a $5 cash discount; the second passenger pays $10.
Greyhound ( GOOGLE MAP ; 800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com ; Metro Center, 920 Pacific
Ave) has a few daily buses to San Francisco ($16.50, three hours), Salinas ($14, one hour),
Santa Barbara ($53, six hours) and Los Angeles ($59, nine hours).
Santa Cruz Metro ( 831-425-8600; www.scmtd.com ; single-ride/day pass $2/6) operates
local and countywide bus routes that converge on downtown's Metro Center (
GOOGLE MAP ; 920 Pacific Ave) . Hwy 17 express buses link Santa Cruz with San Jose's
Amtrak/CalTrain station ($5, 50 minutes, once or twice hourly).
From late May through early September, the Santa Cruz Trolley
( www.santacruztrolley.com ; per ride 25ยข) shuttles between downtown and the beach from 11am
until 9pm daily.
