DON'T MISS
TOP SANTA CRUZ BEACHES
Sun-kissed Santa Cruz has warmer beaches than San Francisco or Monterey. Baywatchit
isn't, but 29 miles of coastline reveal a few Hawaii-worthy beaches, craggy coves, some
primo surf spots and big sandy stretches where your kids will have a blast. Fog may ruin
many a summer morning; it often burns off by the afternoon.
West Cliff Dr
is lined with scramble-down-to coves and plentiful parking. If you don't
want sand in your shoes, park yourself on a bench and watch enormous pelicans dive for
fish. You'll find bathrooms and showers at the lighthouse parking lot.
Locals favor less-trampled
East Cliff Dr
beaches, which are bigger and more protected
from the wind, meaning calmer waters. Except at a small metered lot at 26th Ave, parking
is by permit only on weekends (buy a $8 per day permit at 9th Ave).
Main Beach
BEACH
Thescene, with a huge sandy stretch, volleyball courts and swarms of people. Park on
East Cliff Dr and walk across the Lost Boys trestle to the beach boardwalk.
Its Beach
BEACH
The only official off-leash beach for dogs (before 10am and after 4pm) is just west of the
lighthouse. The field across the street is another good romping ground.
Natural Bridges State Beach
BEACH
Best for sunsets, this family favorite has lots of sand, tide pools and monarch butterflies
from mid-October through mid-February. It's at the far end of W Cliff Dr.
