Railroad and Old West aficionados should make the 6-mile detour north on Hwy 6 to this
museum. It re-creates the village of Laws, an important stop on the route of the
Slim Prin-
cess,
a narrow-gauge train that hauled freight and passengers across the Owens Valley for
nearly 80 years. You'll see the original 1883 train depot, a post office, a schoolhouse and
other rickety old buildings. Many contain funky and eclectic displays (dolls, fire equip-
ment, antique stoves etc) from the pioneer days.

To see the Sierra on display in all its majesty, pop into this gallery, which features the stun-
ning outdoor images of the late Galen Rowell. His work bursts with color, and the High Si-
erra photographs are some of the best in existence.

Fishing
is good in the high-altitude lakes of Bishop Creek Canyon (west of town along
Hwy 168). Other fine spots include the Owens River (northeast) and the Pleasant Valley
Reservoir (Pleasant Valley Rd, north of town).
