Mammoth Mountain SKIING, SNOWBOARDING
( 760-934-2571, 800-626-6684, 24hr snow report 888-766-9778; www.mammothmountain.com ; lift
tickets adult/senior/youth 13-18/child 7-12 $99/84/77/35)
A skiers' and snowboarders' dream resort, where sunny skies, a reliably long season (usu-
ally November to June) and over 3500 acres of fantastic tree-line and open-bowl skiing are
a potent cocktail. At the top you'll be dealing with some gnarly, nearly vertical chutes. The
other stats are just as impressive: 3100 vertical feet, 150 trails, 29 lifts (including 10
quads).
Boarders, meanwhile, will find world-class challenges in nine terrain parks with three
intense superpipes and urban-style jibs.
There are five hubs at the base of the mountain: Main Lodge, Canyon Lodge, Eagle
Lodge, the Mill Cafe and the Village, each with ticket offices and parking lots. Free ski
shuttles pick up throughout town. Alternatively, hop on the Village Gondola, which whisks
you up to Canyon Lodge - the base of several chair lifts - in six minutes.

Let the town shuttle take you to the Tamarack Lodge, which has almost 20 miles of metic-
ulously groomed track around Twin Lakes and the Lakes Basin. The terrain is also great
for snowshoeing. Rentals and lessons are available.
Hiking
Mammoth Lakes rubs up against the Ansel Adams Wilderness and John Muir Wilder-
ness areas, both laced with fabulous trails leading to shimmering lakes, rugged peaks and
hidden canyons. Major trailheads leave from the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Reds Meadow
and Agnew Meadows; the latter two are accessible only by shuttle. Shadow Lake is a
stunning 7-mile day hike from Agnew Meadows, and Crystal Lake makes a worthy
2.5-mile round-trip trek from Lake George in the Lakes Basin.
