WILDERNESS PERMITS: EASTERN SIERRA
Free wilderness permits for overnight camping are required year-round in the Ansel
Adams, John Muir, Golden Trout and Hoover Wilderness areas. For the first three, trail-
head quotas are in effect from May through October and about 60% of the quota may be
reserved online at www.recreation.gov for a $5 fee (per person). From November to April,
you can pick up permits at most ranger stations. If you find the station closed, look for
self-issue permits outside the office. Wilderness permits for the Inyo National Forest can
be picked up in either Lone Pine, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes or its Mono Basin ranger sta-
tions. Yosemite's Tuolumne Meadows Wilderness Center can also issue permits for trips
from Saddlebag Lake. For questions, call the Inyo National Forest Wilderness Permit
Office ( 760-873-2483; www.fs.usda.gov/inyo ).
Permits for the Hoover Wilderness that depart from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National
Forest (seasonal quotas on some trails) are issued at the Bridgeport Ranger Station &
Visitor Center .
The forums on High Sierra Topix ( www.highsierratopix.com ) are an excellent resource for
planning trips.
