Getting There & Around
From the west, Kings Canyon Scenic Byway (Hwy 180) travels 53 miles east from Fresno
to the Big Stump entrance. Coming from the south, you're in for a long 46-mile drive
through Sequoia National Park along sinuous Generals Hwy. Budget about two hours'
driving time from the Ash Mountain entrance to Grant Grove Village. The road to Cedar
Grove Village is only open from around April or May until the first snowfall.
Sequoia National Park
Picture unzipping your tent flap and crawling out into a 'front yard' of trees as high as a
20-story building and as old as the Bible. Brew some coffee as you plan your day in this
extraordinary park with its soul-sustaining forests and gigantic peaks soaring above
12,000ft.
Sights & Activities
Nearly all of the park's star attractions are conveniently lined up along the Generals Hwy,
which starts at the Ash Mountain entrance and continues north into Kings Canyon. Tourist
activity concentrates in the Giant Forest area and in Lodgepole Village, which has the most
facilities, including a visitors center and market. The road to remote Mineral King veers
off Hwy 198 in the town of Three Rivers, just south of the park's Ash Mountain entrance.
