Approximately 9 miles west of the Arch Rock Entrance, the Cedar is a sprawling estab-
lishment with more than 200 adequate rooms, an indoor pool, a seasonal outdoor pool and
a couple of restaurants. Balcony rooms are the best of the bunch.

Less than 2 miles from the park entrance, Yosemite View Lodge is a big, modern complex
with hot tubs, two restaurants and four pools. All the 336 rooms feature kitchenettes, some
have gas fireplaces and views of the Merced River, and the ground-floor rooms have big
patios. Wi-fi is $10 per day.
The souped-up 'majestic suites' are massive, with opulent bathrooms featuring waterfall
showers and plasma-TV entertainment centers.
Groveland
From the Big Oak Flat entrance, it's 22 miles to Groveland, an adorable town with re-
stored Gold Rush-era buildings and lots of visitor services. About 15 miles east of town,
Rainbow Pool ( www.fs.usda.gov/stanislaus ) is a popular swimming hole with a small casca-
de; it's signed on the south side of Hwy 120.

The historic Groveland Hotel dates from 1850 and now houses a small bar, an upscale res-
taurant (mains $15-27) and 17 bright, lovingly decorated rooms with wraparound veran-
dahs and resident teddy bears. Breakfast included May through September only.
