Briceburg
Some 20 miles outside the park, right where the Merced River meets Hwy 140, the town
of Briceburg consists of a visitors center ( 209-379-9414; www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/fol-
som/mercedriverrec.html ; 1-5pm Fri, from 9am Sat & Sun late-Apr-early-Sep) and three primit-
ive Bureau of Land Management campgrounds (BLM; http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/
folsom/mercedriverrec.html ; tent & RV sites $10; ) with a to-die-for location right on the
river. To reach them, you cross a beautiful 1920s wooden suspension bridge, so long trail-
ers and large RVs are not recommended.
El Portal
Right outside the Arch Rock Entrance, and primarily inhabited by park employees, El
Portal makes a convenient Yosemite base. YARTS buses run to Yosemite Valley (adult/
child round-trip $7/5, one hour).

Primarily an inexpensive private campground, Indian Flat RV Park also has a number of
interesting housing options, including two pretty stone cabin cottages with air-conditioning
and roomy tent cabins with ceiling fans and private porches. Guests can use the pool and
wi-fi at its sister property next door, and nonguests can pay to shower.
