DW, E, Er, Ecc, L, Ly, P {The majority of bites
feature mild-mildly moderate local effects.
Recovery in some of these cases may involve
several weeks and require careful wound
management. The retrospective review of 43
cases by Ribeiro et al. (1999) reported that
local pain, edema, erythema, and ecchymoses
were respectively the most common presenting
symptoms (37.2%, 34.9%, 18.6%, and 9.3%).
There were no systemic effects documented. De
Araújo and dos Santos (1997) described a bite
on the fifth digit of the victim's right hand that
resulted in reported “loss of tactile sensitivity,” an
effect ascribed to progressive edema. The local
effects persisted for 10 days, with recovery at 15
days. Silveira and Nishioka (1992) described a
bitten patient with “severe local pain.” Correia
et al. (2010) reported a case involving moderate
edema, erythema, and mild ecchymoses of the
right hand in which the patient received eight
ampoules of polyvalent anti- Bothrops spp.
antivenom with a subsequent antivenom reaction.
One case reported here included widespread
ecchymoses (Warrell, 2004; Plate 4.40A and B).
