Formal Training in Clinical Toxinology
Training in clinical toxinology, a subspecialty of clinical toxicology, is a relatively
new phenomenon, as this highly specialized field of medicine moves toward for-
mal recognition. The first and only comprehensive clinical toxinology course at an
international level has been conducted since 1997 by the Toxinology Department,
Women's & Children's Hospital, Adelaide, South Australia, in conjunction with the
University of Adelaide. Details of upcoming courses may be found on the Clinical
Toxinology Resources website ( http://www.toxinology.com ) or by contacting the
Department. A few countries, such as Brazil, have local courses, while the Museum
of Natural History, Paris, has a general toxinology course, not specific to clini-
cal toxinology, but includes some clinical topics (for information contact: Muséum
national d'Histoire naturelle, 57 rue Cuvier, CP 57, 75005, Paris). As a new initia-
tive, the IST has adopted the establishment of clinical toxinology as a global medical
field of expertise. It will likely take a number of years for this to become established
and/or generally recognized.
