In-Depth Information
a case of non-front-fanged colubroid snakebite, it may sometimes be necessary to
seek further expert advice. While there are individual consultants, covering their
availability and contact details is impractical in a topic, so it is better to seek advice
through an organized expert service. In most parts of the world this function is
fulfilled by a poisons' information center/service. Each country will have phone
numbers for their service, which may change over time. If numbers in your coun-
try are not readily known, you may find contact details through the World Health
Organization website ( http://www.who.int/ipcs/poisons/centre/directory/en/ ) .
Societies and Periodicals
A number of societies have involvement with various aspects of toxinology and
envenoming, including occasional information about non-front-fanged colubroids.
The International Society on Toxinology (IST) is the lead society at a global level
covering both toxinology research and clinical toxinology. Details can be found
on the Society's website ( http://www.toxinology.org ) and in their journal, Toxicon .
The IST publishes original research and holds regular scientific meetings, both at a
global level, and through regional sections of the Society (European Section, Asia-
Pacific Section, Pan-American Section). A number of countries also have national
or regional toxinology societies (e.g., the Brazilian Society of Toxinology, and the
French Society on Toxinology). There are a number of national, regional, and global
toxicology societies, most of which hold regular scientific meetings. Two well-
known annual meetings of this type are the North American Congress of Clinical
Toxicology (NACCT) and the Congress of the European Association of Poisons
Centres and Clinical Toxicologists (EAPCCT), both of which frequently include
presentations on aspects of snakebite. Some additional samplings of journals that
specialize in toxinology are listed below. Contact/subscription information can be
obtained via websearch:

There are also numerous local, national, regional, and international herpetological
societies, some producing scientific journals of high repute that occasionally cover
aspects of non-front-fanged colubroid snakes. A small representative sampling of
well-established herpetological societies is listed below (their respective journals are
in parentheses):
