protracted bite associated with feeding behavior) may produce more severe morbid-
ity that can result in extended convalescence. Other species, such as P. olfersii and
B. irregularis , may be capable of inflicting bites that result in rare systemic effects in
particularly susceptible victims (e.g., infants, children, the elderly, those with comor-
bidities or chronic illness, malnutrition, and/or substance dependency). Therefore,
hazard levels 2 and 2/3 (Table 4.2) species must be handled with care and viewed
with caution. Only increased responsibility and awareness of the need for appropri-
ate training and individual limitations on the part of collectors and commercial/pri-
vate suppliers will prevent the imposition of statutory regulations that will suffocate
reasonable and responsible private access to many captive reptiles and amphibians.
