Plate 4.92 (A-F) Examples of local effects of crotaline viperid envenomations. Moderate-
to-severe envenomation by most crotaline viperids produces local effects that are readily
distinguishable from the comparatively milder local effects of some non-front-fanged
colubroids. Aside from all hazard level 1 and two species of hazard level 2 ( P. olfersii and
Malpolon monspessulanus ) “colubrids,” there are no documented systemic effects associated
with bites by the vast majority of non-front-fanged colubroids.
(A) Common lancehead ( Bothrops atrox ) envenoming, Pulcalpa, Peru. Note the marked
edema, bleeding, ecchymoses, seepage of serosanguinous fluid, and evidence of extensive
inflammation.
(B) Jararaca ( Bothrops jararaca ) envenoming, São Paulo, Brazil. The patient has large
bullae, cellulitic changes, and edema.
(C) Malayan pit viper ( Calloselasma rhodostoma ) envenoming, Chantaburi, Thailand.
The patient has severe blistering, edema, and early necrotic changes.
(D) Malayan pit viper ( Calloselasma rhodostoma ) envenoming, Trang, Thailand. Note the
severe blistering, edema, and early necrotic changes.
