Plate 4.75 Common lancehead; barba amarilla; mapanare; caissaca; cuatro narices;
many others. ( Bothrops atrox ), Morona, Santiago, Ecuador. Another medically important
crotaline viperid of Latin America, this species is responsible for a large proportion of
snakebite-related morbidity and mortality that occurs within its range. It has a reputation for
an aggressive attitude when disturbed, and under some circumstances is quick to strike.
Along with other Bothrops spp., this species may be incorrectly called, “fer-de-lance”.
The “true” fer-de-lance ( Bothrops lanceolatus ) is an insular species restricted to Martinique.
