Plate 4.52 (A) Coast garter snake ( Thamnophis elegans terrestris ), Western USA. This
natricid is a diurnal, active species that has a strong prey preference for slugs. Its diet may
also include other invertebrates such as earthworms, and occasionally small vertebrates such
as nestling mice. The few documented bites have included only mild local edema and minor
ecchymoses. Most bites are medically insignificant.
