JBI runtime environment
The JBI runtime encompasses all of the above—it includes SEs, BCs, the NMR, and a frame-
work allowing for deployment, management, monitoring, and installation.
The Case Against JBI
As Java developers, we're used to vendors implementing Sun specifications for Java-based
technologies, and for this reason, it's easy to be inclined to look for an ESB that implements
JBI. In fact, the Expert Group contributing to the specification includes a long list of organiz-
ations, including:
▪ Members of the Apache Software Foundation
▪ Borland
▪ Cap Gemini
▪ Fujitsu
▪ IONA
▪ JBoss
▪ Intalio
▪ Novell
▪ Nokia
▪ Oracle
▪ SAP AG
▪ Sonic Software
▪ Sun Microsystems
▪ Sybase
▪ TIBCO
▪ Vignette
▪ WebMethods
And this is only a partial list. Such a broad and diverse set of companies coming together in
2004 and 2005 to support the creation of JBI might suggest that JBI would go on to become
the primary means of representing an enterprise service bus. Things did not quite turn out that
way, however.
