Modernism
Macau has a strong heritage of modernism. As well as the modernist villas on Bishop Hill,
the 'Red Market', Pier 8 and the East Asia Hotel are fine examples of Chinese art deco.
Agricultural
The 'old city' - around Rua das Estalagens, Rua de Madeira, Rua dos Mercadores, Rua da
Tercena and Rua de Felicidade (Street of Happiness) - has clan-related structures compris-
ing an alley and a communal altar, as well as humble, one- or two-storey Chinese houses
from agricultural times.

Literature
The most active literary organisation in Macau is the nonprofit Association of Stories in Ma-
cao (ASM), which promotes, through publishing, the poetry and fiction of Macau-based au-
thors in English or in translation. The founder of ASM is Christopher (Kit) Kelen, an Aus-
tralian poet and critic, who has lived in Hong Kong and Macau for close to 20 years.
Kelen has been bringing together the different writers in Macau (and sometimes even
Hong Kong) who write in Chinese, English and Portuguese. His efforts have given rise to
100-plus publications, including solid anthologies of Macau, Chinese and Australian poetry.
Of these the two anthologies of Macau poetry are:
I Roll the Dice: Contemporary Macao
Poetry
(2008) and
Portuguese Poets of Macau
(2010). The first features the works of con-
temporary Chinese-speaking poets in Macau, as well as poetry by Portuguese- or English-
speaking residents of Macau. The second contains the works of some 40 poets, rendered in-
to English. Contributors include contemporary poets and early writers who have left their
mark on Macau, such as Portugal's national poet, Luís de Camões (1524-80), and the sym-
