In-Depth Information
Take the Star Ferry and the trams at least once. They are living heritage and are well con-
nected to some of the main sights.
What to Wear
Hong Kong has its share of fashion-obsessed people, but in general, Hong Kongers are cas-
ual. Many would go to dinner at a fancy restaurant in jeans (though not flip-flops). Central
and Causeway Bay have the best dressers.
Summer is hot and humid. Dress lightly but bring a jacket for air-conditioned facilities.
The aircon can be strong on empty buses and certain indoor areas.
When hiking in summer, pack your swimsuit and goggles for an impromptu dip.
Be Forewarned
Hong Kong is a very safe city, but you should always exercise common sense.
See Click here for more information.
Always be careful of your valuables when in crowded areas.
When using a taxi, always make sure the driver starts the meter.
Some shops and restaurants are closed on the first and second days of the Lunar New
Year, some for a longer period of time.
Money
ATMs are everywhere and operate 24/7. Many allow cash withdrawals with foreign
cards, usually with a transaction surcharge.
International credit cards are accepted at many hotels, shops and restaurants. Many
premises display stickers at entrances showing the credit cards accepted. Visa or Master-
Card are much more common than American Express and Diners Club.
You can change money in most banks and any authorised moneychanger. The latter usu-
ally open well into the evening.
Taxes
There is no value-added tax (VAT) or sales tax in Hong Kong.
