PRACTICAL TIP
BROWSING IN THE OLD CITY
Window-shopping in the old part of town, such as on Rua dos Ervanários and Rua de
Nossa Senhora do Amparo near the Ruins of the Church of St Paul, can be a great ex-
perience. You'll see shops selling stamps, jade, incense and goldfish.
You can also look for antiques or replicas on and around Rua das Estalagens and
Rua de São António. Rua de Madeira and Rua dos Mercadores, which lead up to Rua
da Tercena have stores selling mah-jong tiles and birdcages. These are lovely streets
to walk around, even if you don't buy anything.
Stores selling pork jerky, egg rolls and almond cookies are scattered all over town.
Standards are pretty much the same everywhere, so just hop into the nearest one.
