WORTH A DETOUR
PENG CHAU
Backwater Peng Chau does not possess much wow factor but it is perhaps the most
traditionally Chinese of the Outlying Islands, with narrow alleyways, crowded housing,
a covered wet marrket () near the ferry pier, a couple of small but important temples,
and interesting shops selling everything from humble household goods to religious
paraphernalia. Come any day and you can count on the clatter of mah-jong tiles and
Cantonese opera tunes leaking from old transistors to act as a soundtrack to this
sleepy getaway.

Ferries also depart from Mui Wo and Chi Ma Wan on Lantau and from Cheung Chau.
Additionally, regular kaido(small open-sea ferries) operate to Peng Chau from the
Trappist Monastery and Discovery Bay on Lantau.
There are no cars on Peng Chau, and you can walk around it easily in an hour.
HIKING
FINGER HILL
Climbing the steps to Finger Hill (95m), the island's highest point, offers some light
exercise and excellent views. To get here from the ferry pier, walk up Lo Peng St, turn
right at the Tin Hau temple (), containing a century-old 2.5m-long whale bone
blackened by incense smoke, and walk south along Wing On St. This gives way to Sh-
ing Ka Rd, and Nam Shan Rd leads from here east up to Finger Hill. It's an easy half-
hour walk.

PENG CHAU HERITAGE TRAIL
Follow the signs around Peng Chau to see the ghostly remains of the island's past life
as an industrial hub. Though it may seem hard to believe, this was once one of Hong
Kong's major industrial centres, with a large match factory and a lime kiln. All that re-
mains today is picturesque ruins. Don't miss the cool octagonal well just off the town
square.

TUNG WAN
The water at otherwise-pleasant Tung Wan beach, a five-minute walk from the ferry
pier, is too dirty for swimming and is not served by lifeguards, but it's a great place to
watch the sun set.
