WORTH A DETOUR
TAI PO KAU NATURE RESERVE
The Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve ( GOOGLE MAP ;Tai Po Rd; 70, 72) is a thickly forested
460-hectare 'special area' and is Hong Kong's most extensive woodlands. It is home
to many species of butterflies, amphibians, birds, dragonflies and trees, and is a su-
perb place in which to enjoy a quiet walk. The reserve is criss-crossed with four main
tracks ranging in length from 3km (red trail) to 10km (yellow trail), plus a short nature
trail of less than 1km. The reserve is supposed to emphasise conservation and educa-
tion rather than recreation.
About 1km northwest of the reserve entrance and down steep Hung Lam Dr is the
Kerry Lake Egret Nature Park ( 2657 6657; www.lakeegret.com ; 2 Hung Lam Drive, Tai Po Kau;
72) and the overpriced Museum of Ethnology ( 2657 6657; www.taipokau.org ;2 Hung Lam Dr;
adult/concession HK$18/12; 2-3pm & 5-6pm Sun & public holidays) .
Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve lies south of Tai Po, less than 1km inland from Tolo Har-
bour. The main entrance and the information centre are at the village of Tsuung T
g Tsaii
Yuuen in the northernmost part of the reserve along Tai Po Rd. The reserve is well
served by buses. Bus 70 passes through Jordan and Mong Kok on its way here. Bus 72
can be used to get here from nearby the Sha Tin and Tai Po Market East Rail stations.
A taxi from Tai Po Market East Rail station will cost around HK$27, and from the
University East Rail station about HK$42.
Sha Tin
Explore
You're likely to arrive in New Town Plaza, a claustrophobic shopping mall connected to Sha
Tin station on the East Rail line, if you visit this busy part of the New Territories. There are
a couple of noteworthy religious establishments in the area - 10,000 Buddhas Monastery on
Po Fook Shan Hill and Che Kung Temple by Shing Mun River.
The town's other key drawcard is the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, where you can relive
Hong Kong's past in a range of thoughtfully constructed exhibitions.
If you'd rather have some raw outdoor action, then time your visit with one of the rip-
roaring weekend race days at the beautifully set Sha Tin Racecourse.
