Tai Po
Explore
Tai Po is perhaps the most interesting New Town in the New Territories. Formed from two
former market towns on either side of the Lam Tsuen River, today it has a lively waterfront
downtown ringed by housing estate skyscrapers and, beyond, rolling rural hills.
Tai Po offers quirky temples, a cute railway museum, and several countryside nature
areas, including a lush butterfly reserve. But the best thing about this ever-changing New
Town is the street life. Barter for lychees in the crowded street markets, queue for tofu or
noodles at hole-in-the-wall stalls, or watch proud parents photograph their babies toddling
along the pedestrian bridge crossing the river. This is old-school Hong Kong living at its
finest.
