LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
HONG KONG'S HIDDEN AGENDA
Located in the gritty industrial hub of Kwun Tong, Hidden Agenda ( GOOGLE MAP ;
9170 6073; www.hiddenagendahk.com ;15-17 Tai Yip St, 2A, Wing Fu Industrial Bldg, Kwun Tong; Ngau Tau
Kok, exit B6) is synonymous with underground music in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's best
known music dive has the setting (former warehouse), line-up (solid indie acts), and
elusiveness (it's off the way) all other dives wish they had.
As the city sheds its role as a manufacturing hub, artists and musicians have been
setting up shop in abandoned factories where the rent is cheap and space is abund-
ant. However, complications often arise with the lease of these premises, neighbours
complaining about the noise and landlords hoping to develop their property into
something lucrative.
No stranger to these problems, Hidden Agenda is now living it up at its third location
- a warehouse-turned-venue accommodating 300 people. Its lineup features a pleth-
ora of genres including post-rock, reggae, jazz, techno and punk.
Strong bands from Greater China (Chochukmo, Hungry Ghosts, Carsick Cars) and
overseas (Tahiti 80, The Chariot, Anti-Flag, Alcest, Pitchtuner) have performed here.
See the website for the latest. Hidden Agenda is about a five-block walk from the
MTR. The entrance has a small metal gate that's open after-hours.

Taking up a dramatic spot on the West Kowloon harbourfront, WKCD is developing into
Hong Kong's premier cultural quarter. Construction of cultural spaces began in 2013. In the
meantime, (quasi-)outdoor events take place at the picturesque venue, notably, music fest-
ivals Freespace Fest and Clockenflap ( www.clockenflap.com ) , in November and December,
and West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre, a Chinese opera extravaganza in January. Parts of the
site are open to public even when there are no events on.
After exiting the metro station, head to Nga Cheung Rd, followed by a 10-minute walk to
the WKCD entrance. The website has detailed instructions.
