best to go during the week; on the weekend the market is bursting at the seams with tourists
and locals alike.
Good choices for gifts and souvenirs include stone 'chops' (stamps) carved with the own-
er's name, embroidered baby shoes, and pretty, though factory-produced, painted wooden
boxes. Do bargain here, though not aggressively.

SAMPAN TOURS
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; Aberdeen Promenade; 70 to Aberdeen)
Sampan tours are a fun way to see parts of the island's south coast, and you can easily find
sampan operators milling around the eastern end of the Aberdeen Promenade. Usually they
charge around HK$68 per person for a 30-minute ride (about HK$120 to Sok Kwu Wan and
HK$150 to Yung Shue Wan on Lamma).
If you want just a glimpse of the harbour, you can take a small ferry across to Ap Lei
Chau Island (adult/child under 12 HK$2/1.10), which is also a destination for bargain
hunters drawn to its outlet stores. Alternatively, just hop on the free ferry to Jumbo King-
dom Floating Restaurant and come back.
The promenade can be easily accessed from Aberdeen bus terminus. To get to it just take
the pedestrian subway under Aberdeen Praya Rd.
