In-Depth Information
How Much?
It's not especially cheap to drink in Hong Kong. An all-night boozy tour of the city's drink-
ing landscape can set you back at least HK$800. That said, it's possible to cut corners while
still soaking up the atmosphere - lots of youngsters do that. Buy your drinks from a con-
venience store and hang out with the revellers standing outside the bars. The alley near a
convenience store in Soho is called 'Cougar Alley' for a reason.
Wine & Whisky Bars
A growing number of bars are dedicated to connoisseurship of whisky, gin or other spirits.
Expect hand-carved ice, obscure bottles and nerdily expert bartenders.
Another recent trend is whisky-drinking, and a growing number of bars are devoted to sa-
vouring the amber liquid, including a couple of stylish Japanese whisky bars.
Cafes
Though still dominated by Starbucks and Pacific Coffee (essentially Hong Kong's
homegrown Starbucks), Hong Kong has lately sprouted a very decent independent coffee-
house scene, complete with organic beans, micro-roasters and cupping events.
Dance
TANGO
Hong Kong has a small but zealous community of tango dancers, usually white-collar work-
ers, professionals and expats. Tango Tang ( www.tangotang.com ) , the most prominent of all
the schools, has all tango events, including those by other organisers, posted on its website.
You can join any of the many milongas (dance parties) held every week at restaurants and
dance studios all over town.
SALSA
Hong Kong's vibrant salsa community holds weekly club nights that are open to anyone in
need of a good time. Check out www.dancetrinity.com or www.hongkong-salsa.com . The
annual Hong Kong Salsa Festival ( http://hksalsafestival.com ), held around February, fea-
tures participants from the world over. The website has details of events including the after-
parties.
SWING
If you like swing, there are socials with live jazz bands (and sometimes free beginners'
class) at least six times a month. The calendar on www.hongkongswings.com has more.
