In-Depth Information
Spiritual Spaces
Hong Kong is dotted with hundreds of temples, a fair number of churches, and a handful of
mosques and synagogues - a testimony to its religious freedom. Many of these are historic-
ally important; almost all are free of charge. Even if you're not a history buff, the architec-
ture, artefacts and atmosphere will likely beguile. You can admire the facade of the build-
ings or enter for a few moments of quiet contemplation. For deeper introspection, saunter
among the headstones of the famous dead at Happy Valley Cemetery .
Peninsula Walkthrough
Wander through the gilded halls of one of Asia's most legendary hotels - the Peninsula .
Listen to the subtle clink of silverware as well-dressed patrons take their afternoon tea in the
opulent lobby, then climb the red-carpeted stairs to the 2nd floor to have a look at the colon-
naded verandah and the elegant toilets.
Chungking Express
Don't be afraid to venture into this building for a different face of Hong Kong. Chungking
Mansions , or CKM, has cleaned up its act since its heyday as a slum. Now it's an interesting
maze of guesthouses, phone shops, and cheap South Asian eateries. The eclecticism earned
it the title of the 'best example of globalistion in Asia' and inspired a movie by Wong Kar-
wai.
Stock Exchange
Feel the throbbing in the air as dedicated punters of a different kind make money (or lose it)
in Hong Kong's nerve centre.
