before beginning the afternoon's swim. After that
you can walk or be driven back to the cabins;
either way, when you get there Maria will

like trail across the clear water, immersed in the
moment.
Your hosts for the trip are Finnish couple
Maria and Petri, who open up their summer
holiday home by Lake Sakara to swimming
holiday company Swimtrek. Petri knows
the local area well and - with the help of a
professional swimming guide - he leads the
way across the lakes and rivers. You swim
approximately 5km a day (usually in two
sessions) but you don't have to be a professional
swimmer; so long as you can swim at a steady
pace for this distance you'll be fine.
After each morning's swim, you stop for lunch
(sausages over an open fire) then you've an
hour or so to explore the area on foot or doze off,
Need to know Trips run in July and August only.
Swimtrek ( W www.swimtrek.com) runs swimming
holidays at other times of the year in various other
destinations. A greener way to get there is to take
the train to Rostock in northern Germany ( W www.
bahn.de) then the ferry to Helsinki (25hr approx;
W www.tallink.ee) followed by the train to Riihimäki
(1hr 10min; buy ticket at train station for # 38 return),
where you'll be collected by the tour minibus.
