In-Depth Information
If you can drag yourself out of Trelowarren's
comfort zone, there are some fabulous beaches to
explore around the coastline of the Lizard, such
as Kennack, Pentreath, Polurrian and Mullion.
One of the most picturesque is the National
Trust-owned Kynance Cove, accessible only by
foot, east of the Lizard Point. Just behind the
cove there's a beach café run on solar power,
and the waters here are unpolluted thanks to
an innovative biological waste-water treatment
system. Inland, you can walk across the Lizard's
National Nature Reserve at Goonhilly and
spend a day at Tregellast Barton Farm near
St Keverne, a working organic farm where the
kids can help milk the cows and eat the famous
Roskilly organic ice cream and fudge.

yet this has come at a price: Cornwall's capital
of surf, Newquay, now welcomes thousands of
summer “surf tourists”, but in their wake have
come traffic congestion, amusement arcades and
pollution.
Global Boarders is a holiday company that
is trying to put the soul back into Cornwall's
surfing. Based in Penzance, 80km west of
Newquay on the south coast, it runs small-group
and family-surfing holidays (with lessons for all
levels) at alternative destinations throughout
western Cornwall. Guests are encouraged to
arrive by rail at Penzance, from where there's
a free transfer to their large converted barn on
the outskirts of town. Instead of following the
crowds, you'll head in a minibus to some of the
lesser-known beaches, such as Gwithian and
Godrevy at St Ives, Porthcurno at St Levan and
Sennen at Land's End.
After a day in the water, you're taken back to
the barn overlooking the bay for a barbecue and
chilled beers. Then it's a question of figuring
out where's best to go surfing the following day,
depending on which beaches suit the timing of
the tide and weather conditions. That's what
surfing is all about.

It's all about timing. As you feel the wave touch
your toes at the back of the board, you push
down with your hands and spring up onto your
feet, looking straight ahead as the energy of
the breaker thrusts you forward. You've a split
second to adjust your balance: get it wrong and
you'll be flung off the board into the tumbling
surf; get it right and you can harness the power
of the water to carve out a sweeping arc along
the face of the curling wave. Either way, it's fun:
all you need is a board and a bit of nerve.
Local surfers have long known that Cornwall's
Atlantic coastline is something special, though
only recently has it become internationally
accepted as a first-class surfing location.
Cornwall's economy has prospered as a result,
