WHERE to stay nEaR
sigiRiya, sRi Lanka
Sigiriya, the ruined rock fortress sitting atop the vast, ancient plug of magma of
an eroded volcano, is a striking sight. But it's only up close that the architectural
sophistication of the citadel - commissioned by the fifth-century monarch King Kasyapa
- becomes clear. On the journey upwards you'll climb through terraced gardens - with
gravity-powered fountains that still flow at the height of the monsoon - past caves
subsequently used for meditation by Buddhist monks, and beautiful frescoes that reveal
the advanced artistry of the time, before reaching the fortress ruins and extraordinary
views at the summit. Below are our three favourite places to stay nearby.
455 Vil Uyana
A 5km drive from Sigiriya, Vil Uyana blurs the
boundary between hotel and nature reserve.
The resort is built over reclaimed paddy fields
and is made up of 25 vaulted wooden villas.
Guests can choose which ecosystem they would
like their villa to look out over: there are six
among the paddy fields, six over marshlands,
three suspended above the water and connected
by waterways, and ten - the largest and most
private dwellings - nestled in the forest habitat.
Each villa has its own private plunge pool and
sun deck, and the restaurant serves fantastic
food. So successful has this natural development
