In-Depth Information
On land, it's a quiet and gentle place - free
from cars and city lights - where wild ponies,
Soay sheep and Sika deer roam among moorland
and heath. The only inhabitants are the few
people who look after the island's buildings - a
church, a small convenience store, a pub and over
twenty properties, managed by the Landmark
Trust, which it has restored as holiday lets.
These include cottages, dormitory-style barns,
a lighthouse, a late-Regency house (for twelve
people) and a thirteenth-century castle. The
remote Tibbetts is the only one that has no
electricity, while the Old Schoolhouse, a cottage
for two overlooking the sea, is just a short walk
from the pub, where you can enjoy good, home-
cooked food and island-brewed beer by a large
wood fire.

Two hours by boat off the north Devon coast,
Lundy is perfect for a long weekend's mini-
adventure, scrambling down steep banks to
explore rock pools and coves on the protected
east coast, or taking blustery walks along the
exposed west coast where a Georgian cannon and
Britain's highest lighthouse sit atop the cliffs.
Lundy was once famous for its resident puffin
population, and though numbers have dwindled
in recent years, the island is still home to a
handful of breeding pairs. The rugged coastline
is also a magnet for climbers, attracted to the
island's many challenging rockfaces.
Lundy is England's only marine reserve,
established to protect the huge variety of
aquatic life around the island, including sea
fans, branching sponges and cup coral. A marine
warden runs wildlife-watching trips in summer:
you can snorkel or dive to see the island's
resident grey seals, and you might even spot one
or two basking sharks off the coast.
