GReeN loNdoN
It may not immediately seem a green city, but London has a burgeoning eco-movement,
from barge communities to organic delis and farmers' markets. You'll see plenty more
people on their bikes in the city centre these days too - although it's not for the faint
of heart. Below is one possible itinerary for a greener day out in the English capital: a
visit to a wetland centre, lunch or dinner with an eco-twist and then a buzzing clubbing
experience where you can generate your own electricity.
020 london wetland Centre
One of London's largest green spaces, the
London Wetland Centre is a vast network of
wetland habitats that's just 25min on the train
from central London. It's run by the Wildfowl
and Wetlands Trust and though it's a must-see
for birders, it's also a great place to while away
a few hours away from the crush of Oxford
Street. You can wander the lakeside pathways
and visit ponds, reed-bed marshes and wetland
meadows, climb up a three-storey bird hide or
just watch images of the birds from the more
remote areas of the reserve that are beamed
back to TV monitors in the visitor centre. Kids
will like it too - there's a Discovery Centre with
water games and an adventure playground with
a zip wire, giant “water vole” tunnels and a safe
climbing wall.
