Green maPs
Open-source websites like Wikipedia have encouraged
web users to pool their knowledge for the common good,
and Green Maps is a cartographic offshoot of this trend:
a project that allows people to share their knowledge of
their local area's environmentally friendly facilities and
attractions with the world. Users contribute information via
a set of icons, as shown below, making it easy to read any
map, whatever the nationality of those who produced it (at
present there are over five hundred map projects being
developed in 54 countries). The project's slogan is “think
global, map local” and it is exactly that - a wonderful way
of getting access to the sort of information normally only
gained by living in a place.
It's not specifically targeted at travellers, although with the maps highlighting everything from where
farmers' markets and volunteering sites can be found to good places to go birdwatching or watch the
sun rise, it offers a great deal not normally found on a typical map. Not all maps are online, and it may be
necessary on occasion to contact the producers via the Green Maps website ( W www.greenmap.org).
